Tzu Chi Ramen Noodles

Today is the last day for the year 2011. How crazy!!! Just like any other day, today was super busy and filled with surprised! We have been eating a lot of ramen lately, because there has been a shortage in the food budget at the creche. Many times, even if we do have the means to buy food, there is a problem with transport and we cannot go out and buy food. Many different obstacles come up at all times.

So today was no different. Everything was stable until when we got to tonight. We all sat down to eat ramens and then we saw there were many black flakes. At first glance, we all thought it was pepper flakes, since they do that sometimes, but then at a closer glance....they were actually little mites!!!! Eh. Not pleasant. I have no idea how they got there, they must have already been in the individual packets of ramen noodles when they were cooking them. It is really not the cooking staff's fault either since we have no electricity and it is very hard to see them even when we have light. So cooking in the dark with a small oil lamp definitely makes it hard to notice them when cooking. So needless to say, we stopped eating the noodles and I ran to the kitchen to tell them to stop serving it to the children. The older children had already eaten all of their servings, but the babies have not yet. THANK GOODNESS! With the babies' record of being sick in the past few months, this was definitely not the time to get stomach viruses again. Everyone was freaking out that I threw away all the ramen for the babies, because we had no other food left. I quickly thought that I can make some of the Tzu Chi Ramen Noodles for the babies. We were running out of gas for the stove as well, so I quickly ran to get more noodles. I made 5 packets of the Tzu Chi Wild Vegetables Noodle packs, where the noodles are actually green in color. I cooked all the noodles for as long as the gas would allow me then I started to use a manual egg beater to help blend the noodles. My arm was dying from turning the egg beater for over half an hour. The noodles were getting to be pretty mushed and then we put it through a hand strainer. This all took about two hours, where finally two aunties and I made enough food for 16 babies! Oh boy, a blender would have definitely helped in this situation, but we did it the old school way, got some muscles working! Great work out!

The babies were all screaming out of hunger. We fed each one of them and after the meal, each one of them were all smiles. It was the first time in months that all the babies ate all the food and no one had thrown up! On top of that, most babies sat quietly while being fed. The best thing was probably that all babies, while I was feeding them, touched my Buddhist bead bracelet that Master Cheng Yen gave to me when I was back in Taiwan. It was as if to say thank you to her for providing them with food. I was very touched by this gesture. Looking in their eyes, it was as if they understood. I talked to them about Master Cheng Yen and they all smiles. Good Karma was doing its work tonight! No doubt! I am very grateful for this opportunity! Great big shout out to the Tzu Chi PDX family and my mom for sending me the Tzu Chi ramen noodles. They came in handy tonight!

This was the end result for the smaller babies!
The rest that did not go through the strainer went to feed the older babies! Nothing was wasted! Awesome!

All the babies went to bed with a full stomach and a nutritious meal tonight! I am so grateful for all the support! Thank you Buddha for looking after all these children at the orphanage! I couldn't ask for a better way to end 2011!

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE EVERYONE!

Kernaline's Wedding

Kernaline is Fondation Enfant Jesus' long time secretary. She is like a grand daughter to Manmie Duncan since she has been with the foundation ever since she was a young lady. We have all been looking forward to her wedding all these months. She is marrying her friend that she knew ever since she was a teenager. They re-found each other now and is going to start a brand new life together. I am so happy for the two of them, but at the same time sad to see her go, since she lives just across from me at the creche. We have been great chatting buddies throughout the couple of months that I have been here at FEJ. The wing is going to be quite empty without her there.

So we all got dressed up today to go attend her wedding. It was a small wedding, just for close friends and family members. I was super excited, because this is my first Haitian wedding. I felt really honored that she would want to include me in her wedding today! What an amazing time we had! So I guess the wedding wasn't a typical Haitian wedding. A typical Haitian wedding would be at a church and have lots and lots of food at the reception. Kernaline is more of a low-key kinda gal, so she just wanted it to be simple. They did not get married at a church, because the guy is not catholic and apparently it takes a long process before he can be deemed "Catholic-enough," whatever that means. So they opted for just a civil wedding. The wedding took place at one of her friend's home in Kenscoff, which was just beautiful!

Kernaline looked absolutely beautiful today!

Here comes the bride!!!!!

Me and Manmie Duncan! She looked so beautiful today! It was one of those rare days that she let her hair down!
Auntie Vania did my hair for the wedding today. How amazing is this design on my head???? I love it! She should really open her own hair salon! What great talent!
There was a civil judge there to marry the happy couple! The big theme was being able to have TOLERANCE! She got that right! Two people coming together as one is a big challenge! Good luck to the love birds!
The chair covers were beautiful!
Kernaline was very happy to see us! She was beautiful!

Kenscoff Christmas Party

It is Christmas today!!!!!

Yesterday and today was filled with decorating the creche. We got all the children bathed and dressed in their best Christmas outfits! Everyone of them looked so darn cute. The party was a huge success! Everyone danced and sang and ate lots and lots of food. I distributed all the gifts for both the children and the aunties that worked at the Kenscoff creche. Everyone was all very happy and grateful!

All the girls had their hair done and I was no exception. Auntie Elta said that "Lori needs a good hair do for Christmas!" She braided my hair and it looked awesome! I even had green and red hair ties to celebrate! How festive!
I have become very close with all the aunties at Kenscoff. They were all dressed up today! How lovely!
This was the main room where the party took place. Didn't everyone do an awesome job with the decorations???
Me, Ms. Deleau, Auntie Vania, and Auntie Elta.
Santa was a big hit! We called him on the cell phone to see what time he was arriving. All the children waited with excitement!
We all DANCED and SANG the afternoon away!
Thanks to Ralph for sending me a box of chocolates! Everyone loved them! What a great way to end the night on Christmas!

Will's Fiancee Arrives

It has been a long week already, but things are not about to slow down! Today we headed up to Kenscoff, because I had to go up there to get their Christmas party all set up and ready. Lucien is out of town, so Roberto has been driving the truck. I love being in the back of the truck, because that is where you can get the best view of Haiti. It does get super dusty though, but it is all worth it! Will headed up with me today because we were going to the airport to go pick up his fiancee, Lauren. She is flying in from North Carolina. She will spending 12 days with us here in Haiti.

Me being on the back of the truck!
Lauren arrived safely and Will was a very happy camper!
A bunch of Lauren's co-workers in the states got some money together to buy some Crocs for the children here. I requested Crocs since they are light and easy to wash here in Haiti. What a great turn out! Thanks Lauren and her co-workers for this awesome Christmas donation!

It was a huge success! All the babies, toddlers, and older children all came together to celebrate as one! I couldn't be any prouder of them today!
The kitchen staff were hard at work preparing all the food!

FEJ Elementary School Christmas Party

Today was FEJ Elementary School's Christmas Party. All the staff went over to the school to support the event. All the children were told to dress in red, so the ambiance was awesome. All the children looked so cute in their red shirts! There was a whole program set out for the morning, which included singing, dancing, and musical performances. All the children did a fantastic job!

This was the school choir! They did a fantastic job singing Catholic songs throughout the program!

The ceremony started with a prayer to God. Thanking him for his blessings this year!
Brunette and I representing the FEJ creches!

The children all sat in the cafeteria area by class!
The flute performances were awesome! They did three numbers: Silent Night,  Carol Of The Bells, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas!

The school's dance team did a Voodou number for us! It was awesome! I loved the music!
